Process Monitoring - HBK amplifier to monitor crucial processes

Orwin, united kingdom

Introduction

Orwin, one of largest automation and special purpose machine builders in the UK, has utilised HBK's MP85ADP in an Active Engine Mount Cell assembly line. The Active Engine Mount reduces noise and vibrations within a vehicle compartment by sensing vibrations and adjusting the mount's stiffness to cancel their effect.

The Active Engine Mount Cell has proved extremely successful in reducing noise and vibrations from the vehicle compartment; Orwin's customers have said they are completely satisfied with the final result.

Active Engine Mount Cell assembly line of Orwin required swift identification and rectification of any cracks or failed parts, ensured that no flaws could be passed on to the next part of the assembly process.

The MP85ADP is a key component on the assembly line as it is used for measurement and quality control of the applied force and distance in the crimping process; this was one of the customer’s key criterions. The amplifier is very fast and easily highlights any peaks or spikes in the process which leads to swift identification and rectification of any cracks or failed parts. Orwin selected the MP85ADP because it enables engineers to input up to eight measurement windows whilst monitoring the applied force and distance throughout the crimping process. Orwin input algorithms and were able to track progress in terms of distance and force using the force-displacement monitoring curve so that any flaws that might happen during the crimping process were readily detected. This ensured that no flaws could be passed on to the next part of the assembly process. These were critical concerns for the Orwin’s client. The MP85ADP processes the data of up to 300 fitting cycles per minute – and ensures maximum reliability even in the fastest production lines. Industrial fieldbus technology and digital inputs and outputs enabled Orwin to easily and optimally integrate the amplifier into its automation system.

Utilising the MP85ADP gave Orwin several advantages including the data export function which enabled data to be saved to a remote server. This meant that Orwin’s customer could easily and remotely access data on all parts that had previously been through the machine. An important feature of the MP85ADP is that it enables Orwin to benefit from a barcode feature that gives complete traceability of components. This feature was particularly important on this contract because the client’s specifications stated that accounting for individual parts was an essential requirement. An added bonus was that the MP85ADP can be easily integrated into a range of machines and it is easy to set-up. Orwin comments, “We know from previous contracts with HBK that their products are reliable and easy to use as well as backed by a strong support system following product delivery." Although the machine is capable of change part tooling, it is primarily used to produce two crimping variants, a right- and a left-hand, both equal in size. Orwin’s customer benefited because the machine can be used to produce additional variations if needed.

Orwin has more than 30 years of technical expertise and knowledge which has enabled the company to penetrate virtually every marketplace and technology. This means we can tailor design to your exact requirements. Some 40% of the company’s orders are for export with Orwin providing a wide spectrum of in–house resources to support any project from concept through to installation and service.
